The\n50th<\/sup> International Heinrich-Sch\u00fctz-Festival brought us to Karlsruhe\nfrom October 10-13 this year. Even though the city of Karlsruhe did not yet\nexist in Sch\u00fctz\u2019s lifetime, there are nonetheless direct connections to\nDurlach, a district of present-day Karlsruhe, through the wedding on 24 August\n1613 of Landgrave Otto of Hessen-Kassel, the oldest son of Landgrave Moritz of\nHessen-Kassel, with Katharina Ursula of Baden, the daughter of Margrave Georg\nFriedrich of Baden-Durlach. These contacts were the reason why we spent the\nfirst day of the Festival in Durlach. The opening event in the Karlsburg, the\nresidence of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach since 1565, was framed by\nChristian-Markus Raiser playing harpsichord music of the seventeenth century\nfrom a manuscript owned by the Durlach school professor Michael Bulyovszky. We\nwere especially honoured to have Wolfgang Rihm join us for the roundtable\ndiscussion. After the city tour, the Johann Rosenm\u00fcller Ensemble performed\nmusic by Heinrich Sch\u00fctz, Leonhardt Sailer and Georg Christoph Strattner in the\nDurlach Stadtkirche, which in the seventeenth century also served as the court\nchapel, and where this music was heard for the first time again in almost 350\nyears. The high-calibre scholarly symposium in the Badische Landesbibliothek\nexplored the topic \u201cRepresentational Music in Residences of Sch\u00fctz\u2019s Time\u201d. The\nimpressive programme of this year\u2019s Sch\u00fctz- Festival comprised, moreover, a\ncourse on the interpretation and performance of Sch\u00fctz\u2019s music led by Hans\nChristoph Rademann; a vocal a capella concert in the Zentrum f\u00fcr Kunst und\nMedien, presenting music from Sch\u00fctz to Rihm under the direction of KMD\nChristian-Markus Raiser; a concert with excerpts from the Psalmen Davids with\nthe Dresdner Kammerchor; an organ walk; a viewing at the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe;\na concert featuring music from the wedding at Rudolstadt in 1638 with the\nBremer Barock Consort led by Manfred Cordes; and a concert with settings of\nPsalm 116 from the collection \u201cAngst der Hellen und Friede der Seelen\u201d of 1623.\nThe Festival concluded with the customary celebratory service in the\nEvangelische Stadtkirche Karlsruhe. The music was provided by the Karlsruhe\nchoirs Cantus Juvenum, Lutherana and the Durlach singing school, with the\nparticipation of those members of our Society who were keen to sing. The final\nconcert also involved the Nordbadische Bl\u00e4serensemble, which treated us to a\nmatinee after the service. We would like to express our thanks here to KMD\nChristian-Markus Raiser and the organisational team in Karlsruhe for their\noutstanding efforts. All of the events were very well attended, showing that\nthe conception of the 50th<\/sup> International Heinrich-Sch\u00fctz-Festival\nwas perfectly tailored to the local setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n51st<\/sup> International Heinrich-Sch\u00fctz-Festival will take place in the\nold Hanseatic town of Lemgo on September 24-27, 2020. The last time our Society\nmet there was in 1964, and we gratefully take up the invitation of the Festival\nmixTour and the Weserrenaissance-Museum Schloss Brake to hold our annual\nmeeting in 2020 there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
